This paper considers how the Catholic Church internationally and in Australia has tried to grapple with the issues of employment and unemployment since Pope Leo XIII’s 1891 encyclical, On the Condition of the Working Class (Rerum Novarum), and comments on the contexts and effectiveness of official Vatican and episcopal documents.
