The way towns and cities are designed can have profound and often unintended consequences on the ability of people to live lives of dignity, fulfill their God-given potential and develop a personal understanding of their faith. This paper explores why urban design is an issue Christians should be interested in. It seeks to shed some light on how our towns and cities embody values and influence the quality of people’s lives by effectively opening and closing doors to them, limiting the opportunities available to them. This paper then suggests some ideas about how our urban areas can be designed to nurture people, create a level playing field of opportunity, express compassion and reflect Christ’s teachings to love one another.
